Honourable Gentlemen
The trial against Dr. Alp Ayan, Izmir, 2 October 2002

The World Medical Association has been informed that there will be a trial against Dr. Alp Ayan 2 October 2002 at the Izmir Penal Court of First Instance. We believe that Dr. Ayan has been accused of protesting against the treatment of the prisoners in the new high security prisons in Turkey (the F-type prisons). According to medical evidence, F-type prisons facilitate increased isolation and degrading treatment, which can cause illness.

The World Medical Association, global representative body for physicians, affirms the physicians' right and duty to speak out against systems that can harm peoples' health (Please see attached World Medical Association Declaration Concerning Support for Medical Doctors Refusing to Participate in, or to Condone, the Use of Torture or Other Forms of Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment).

We therefore urge the Turkish authorities to afford Dr. Ayan a fair trial, and to do all you can to uphold the highest possible standards of human rights.

Yours sincerely,
The World Medical Association
