On April 8-9, 2011, the Section on Art and Psychiatry held a WPA co-sponsored Intersectional meeting, planned jointly with the Section on Literature and Psychiatry. Through a variety of disciplinary lenses, the conference explored social constructs of the norm, pathology and disability and the potential of art in disorders involving body image disturbance.
The conference took place at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center in midtown Manhattan. The Section’s Secretary, Dr. Sukhanova, served as Chair of the Supervisory Committee of the conference. Twenty scientific panels were held with approximately 250 attendees mainly from the US, France, and Canada. The working language was English, with French interpretation provided at selected panels.
The meeting was co-sponsored by the University of Paris-Diderot (and specifically by its Pandora research group of the Centre de Recherches Psychanalyse, Médecine et Société), the University of Lyon-2, and CUNY. The Section’s Chair, Dr. Hans-Otto Thomashoff, was invited to serve as the keynote speaker at the opening. Drs. Kopytin and Sukhanova presented papers in scientific symposia. Our profound thanks go out to the CUNY University Dean for Health and Human Services Dr. William Ebenstein, whose office provided invaluable support in the organization of the meeting.
The meeting has already resulted in new collaborative links between the many academic entities involved. Publication of a thematic volume is currently being discussed.
