Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrists 2011 Conference

Representatives from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Pakistan with WPA Secretary of Sections and WPA Zonal Representative for Zone 16.The Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrists (BAP), an active WPA Member Society from the South Asian Region organised its 6th International Conference on 16-18 October 2011 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This was a well-attended and very ably organized conference that was attended by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals from a number of countries including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, UK, Turkey and New Zealand. The meeting was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

The scientific part of the meeting included plenary lectures, special sessions on the theme of the conference, sessions for junior psychiatrists and poster presentation. Like the scientific programme, the participants also enjoyed the cultural part of the meeting as well.

It is worth mentioning that the meeting was attended by all presidents of national associations from the SAARC region. A special board meeting of SAARC Psychiatric Federation (an Affiliated Association of the WPA) also took place at this conference. This meeting while following the WPA philosophy of the working together of Member Societies also served another major objective of initiating a number of links among the psychiatrists working in the South Asian region. Similarly this meeting also brought the agenda of development of mental health services in Bangladesh as a priority and the presence of the prime minister of the country at the inaugural session clearly showed an interest of the government in the field of mental health.

Our thanks go to Prof. Rabbani, President of the Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrists and his dedicated team for their efforts to make this conference a real success.

Afzal Javed, WPA Secretary for Sections
Manickam Thirunavukarasu, WPA Zonal Representative for Zone 16
