Organized by the Association for Biological Psychiatry / Psychopharmacology in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ABPPFBH) and the Department of Psychiatry, Clinical Center Sarajevo and co-organized by the Psychiatric Association of Bosnia-Herzegovina (PABH), the 5th Symposium of Biological Psychiatry/Psycopharmacology in Bosnia and Herzegovina was held on 10-11 October 2011 in Konjic ("Garden City Hotel & Spa"). This year’s main theme of the Symposium was "Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders". The Symposium was opened by the President of ABPPFBIH and the President of the Organizing Committee, Prof. Abdulah Kučukalić. The two-day duration of the Symposium consisted of 20 invited lectures by eminent psychiatrists and lecturers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia, and it was attended by 80 participants. We are delighted that most of the participants were members of the PABH. The lectures provided an opportunity for us to improve our knowledge on anxiety disorders, through latest evidence-based findings and the newest information about changes in taxonomy (ICD-11 and DSM-5). This expert meeting focused on the modern approach to anxiety in order to achieve a better quality of life for people suffering from those disorders. All this confirmed the already established practice of the integrative approach to psychiatry, and the interaction between psychiatry and other branches of medicine.
This Symposium has also contributed to the World Mental Health Day (10 October), a symbolic date for this event. During the Symposium the General Assembly of PABH and the Assembly of the Association of Trainees and Young Psychiatrists in Bosnia and Herzegovina were held. In addition to invited speakers, four Mini Satellite Symposia were held. The Symposium was accompanied by an exhibition of 14 sponsoring pharmaceutical companies. The organizers of the social component of the program hosted a Gala dinner which the participants enjoyed in a very impressive atmosphere of "Garden City Hotel & Spa” and its surroundings on the banks of river Neretva and the beautiful small Herzegovinian historical City of Konjic.
This year's Symposium was successful in a professional and organizational aspect, and it has been added to the list of psychiatric events of the first rank in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and slowly building a tradition on solid foundations in the coming years. We look forward to the 6th Symposium of Biological Psychiatry / Psychopharmacology in Bosnia and Herzegovina which will be co-organized by the PABH.
