Activities in Pakistan 2011-2012

December 2011:

a) A workshop for media persons on the theme “Mind” and Health - An awareness programme for media, was organized in Lahore, Punjab on 13 December 2011 in which 60 senior journalists from print media and electronic media participated. They were given media guidelines including reporting tips, common mental health issues, etc. Presenters at the occasion were Prof. Rizwan Taj and Asima Mehboob Khan.

b) The 19th National Conference of Pakistan Psychiatric Society (PPS) was held on 24-25 December 2011 in Lahore. The Conference theme was “Psychiatric complication of Dengue Virus Fever and Psychological Intervention”.

The inaugural session started with a welcome address by Dr. Nisar Hussain, Chairman of the organizing committee. A report was then presented by Prof. Aziz ur Rehman, General Secretary, PPS. Prof. Taj gave a Presidential Lecture, and Prof. Muhammad Sharif, patron of the 19th National Psychiatric Conference also addressed the participants

Mr. Saeed Ilahi, provincial health adviser, was the chief guest.

Over 30 original papers were presented and two workshops were conducted. A large number of mental health professionals from all over the country and abroad attended the conference.

January 2012:

A second workshop for media persons was organized in Islamabad. Prof. Rizwan Taj enlightened the audience with mental health problems prevailing in the society, and discussed myths/misconception about mental disorders. He also spoke about the effect of media reporting on mental health and gave guidelines.

February 2012:

a) A Mental Health in Primary Care for Teachers roll out training program was started. In this regard 20 teachers were trained at the Islamic international school. It was a two-day training on 3-4 February. The master Trainers included Sidra Khurram, Yasmeen Mehmood, and Prof. Rizwan Taj.

b) A second round of training in "Mental Health in Primary Care for Teachers" was held at the City school on 9-10 February; a hundred and twenty teachers participated in the training.  

c) A one-day (11 February) seminar on Mental Health in Primary Care for GP was held at the Arrahma Hospital Multan. It was attended by 70 General Practitioners from the region. Prof. Rizwan Taj, President of the Pakistan Psychiatric Society was the chief guest on the occasion. Prominent speakers included Prof. Raza Rahman, Col. Dr. Khalid Mehmood, Dr. Leghari, Brig. Shoaib Ahmed, Brig. Farrukh Hayat, and Dr. Mazher Mailk.
