The Board of the WPA Section on Religion, Spirituality and Psychiatry, Chair Dr. Peter Verhagen, Co-chair Prof. John Cox, Secretary Prof. Nahla Nagy, and Editor Advisors Prof. Alexander Moreira-Almeida and Simon Dein have worked hard over the past few months to finish the first issue of the Section’s Newsletter “Psyche and Spirit” which includes the history of the Section’s activities, recent books and research on the subject, upcoming events of special interests and meeting points for exchange of experience . You can find this Newsletter on the Section’s website, and I would be pleased to receive your comments.
The Section Board also contributed to the coming DSMV and ICD-11 about considering spiritual and religious issues in the new classification and diagnostic systems. The second upcoming activity this year to be held by our Section is an international survey about attitudes and teaching of religion and psychiatry in the mental health field. The results will be used to improve future teaching and research in this area.
New publications: Peter Verhagen finished the Dutch Handbook on Psychiatry and Religion and I was invited to write an article about the Middle East Revolutions and its impact on Mental Health in the International Journal of Psychiatry from the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Moreover, the Section members are looking forward to sharing in the scientific activities of the WPA Congress in Prague with several Section symposia covering the issue of religion and spirituality in psychiatric practice.
