Influence of ethnos on formation of alcohol dependency and level of social functioning of indigenous population of Siberia

In West Siberia and along the coast of the Ob River, islands of indigenous ethnic cultures including Selkups exist up to the present time.

Their total number within the Russian Federation according to the data of the All-Russian Census of the population in 2002 has been ascertained to be 4,249, including 1,701 in the Tomsk Region.

Most of the problems of the Narym (Southern) Selkups are associated with peculiarities of formation and cause of substance use disorders. The results obtained during the course of an investigation testify to the extremely low level of the adaptation of Narym Selkups thus resulting in the decrease of this population.

Regarding Selkups-alcoholic patients as compared with those of Slavic nationality, malignant cause of alcoholism, aggressive behavior, commitment of offences in conditions of intoxication, are typical.

The problem of prevalence of alcohol dependency among the indigenous population of the Far North could not be resolved only by measures of medical character. The study of ethnic traits of formation of mental disorders with the development of programs of prevention, treatment and re-adaptation of patients could render a positive influence on medico-demographic indices of the population.
