Psychiatric Association of Bosnia-Herzegovina

The 6th Symposium of Biological Psychiatry in Bosnia and Herzegovina

This Symposium was organized by the Association for Biological Psychiatry/Psychopharmacology in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ABPPFBH) and the Department of Psychiatry of University Clinical Center Sarajevo. The co-organizer of the Symposium for the past three years was the Psychiatric Association of Bosnia-Herzegovina (PABH). The Symposium, titled “Co-morbidity in Psychiatry” was held on 18-19 May 2012 in the “Turist” Hotel, in the city of Jajce.

The Symposium was opened by the President of ABPPFBH and the President of the Organizing Committee, Prof. Abdulah Kučukalić and was welcomed by the President of PABH, Prof. Izet Pajević. On behalf of the colleagues from the host City, participants were welcomed by the Director of the Health Center Jajce, Dr. Ivo Barišić.

The two-day Symposium consisted of 19 invited lectures by eminent psychiatrists and lecturers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia. The Symposium was attended by around a hundred participants. We are delighted that most of the participants were members of PABH. The lectures provided an opportunity for us to improve our knowledge on important and very actual issues of the co-morbidity in psychiatry and psychiatric co-morbidity in other fields of medicine (cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, infective diseases, etc.).

In addition to invited speakers, four Satellite Symposia were held during the main program of the Symposium and the Symposium was accompanied by an exhibition of 15 sponsoring pharmaceutical companies. All participants recieved a Certificate of Attendance with CME points. The organizers hosted a gala dinner. Thanks to our hospitable colleagues from Jajce, all participants of the Symposium had the opportunity to see the historical parts of the city (Roman Catacombs) and had a boat trip and lunch on the bank of the Pliva Lake.

This year's Symposium was successful in professional and organizational aspects, and it has been included in the list of psychiatric events of the first rank in Bosnia and Herzegovina with its built tradition, recognized regionally. We look forward to the next, the Seventh Symposium of Biological Psychiatry/Psychopharmacology in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2013, at which our Association will again be co-organizer.

After the Key Lecture and two plenary sessions with 10 speakers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, all participants had the opportunity to participate in a dynamic discussion about the topic which is always current, especially in times of economic and political transition that our society is going through. The Symposium was organized by the Department of Psychiatry (University of Mostar School of Medicine) and co-organized by The Psychiatric Association of Bosnia-Herzegovina (PABH) together with the regional Medical Chamber. The accompanying program was eventful, with 12 exhibitions of Symposia sponsors, presentation of medical magazines and journals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as several books about earlier “Saturdays”. The day before, participants were able to attend the traditional Eli Lilly Satellite Symposium with the title “Depression of the pain: emotional and physically” followed by a gala dinner organized by the host of the pre-symposium.
