Swedish Psychiatric Association Congress 2012

The Swedish Psychiatric Association managed this year to gather 620 of its members at the annual Congress. The meeting was held, as last year, in Gothenburg's largest cinema with 13 auditoriums. For three days we were treated with up to six parallel scientific applications. In addition a Psychiatric Film Festival was held and a “Culture Track” about literature and art with psychiatric affiliation.

The program reflected the entire spectrum of mental illnesses from Sexology to Psychopharmacological treatment of psychotic illnesses via Geropsychiatry and Psychotherapy. Social issues were also represented: there were lectures about Evidence-based change management. Compulsory treatment of young women with self-injury was given special attention as well as Psychiatry and the media. “Become a writing psychiatrist” was the headline.

At the appreciated Film Festival Woody Allen movies illustrated “the fraudulent stream of consciousness and prefrontal function”.

A congress of colleagues is not just to soak up knowledge, but an opportunity to meet old and new acquaintances. Our congress dinner was held in Gothenburg former post office recently completed as a hotel.

It is with pride that we talk about these events. Rewarding and enjoyable congresses are important. Next year the Swedish Psychiatric Association Congress takes place in Stockholm, and the preparations are in full swing.
