Psychoanalysis in Psychiatry

An Open Day

The Section organised a one-day conference in March 2012 at the Belle Idée psychiatric clinic on the theme: Why, how and for whom is inpatient psychoanalysis intended?  There was a good turnout and the atmosphere was very convivial.  The Section’s Honorary President, Simon Daniel Kipman, also attended and made a strong appeal in his presentation, encouraging us to widen our deliberations to cover all the different aspects of medicine (see site: www.simon-daniel-kipan.com).

Several presentations were made in the morning by Prof. François Ansermet, Prof. Panteleimon Giannakopoulos, Prof. Bruno Gravier and other colleagues directly involved in treating patients, who shared their idea on expanding the field of psychotherapy in the broadest sense of the term. The fact is that all patients whoever they are and whatever their problems need a relational input. Nobody must be excluded. It is up to us to ensure that every patient, even those in the most difficult circumstances, can benefit from a specific relational input with a high psychotherapeutic value added. Putting it another way, it is important to maintain a link in which a special and personalised relationship is forged with the patient. In our view psychoanalysis is particularly suited to offer this dimension, thus providing added value to our clinical practice.

In the afternoon we were delighted to be able to visit the WPA Secretariat where we were very warmly received by Prof. Levent Küey, WPA Secretary General. This was followed by a visit to the Bodmer Foundation which has a collection of extremely rare books including one of the five copies of the Gutenberg Bible and other first editions of works both old and new (see their site: htpp://fondationbodmer.ch).

The Section participates actively in the many congresses organised by the WPA and we are always very pleased to establish links, to open a dialogue, to share our thoughts, so don’t hesitate to contact us.
