Past six months activities in 2012

1. Mental Health in Primary Care Workshops:

a) A primary care in mental health workshop was organized for LHVs, Paramedics, GPs and health professionals from all over AJK; over 30 participants were trained. This training is a chain of previous trainings organized by the Department of Psychiatry, Kings College London, British Council, THET and SLAMS. Presenters at the occasion were Prof. Rachel Jenkins, Prof. Rizwan Taj, Mr. Stuart Lancashire, and Asima Khan.

b) The third and fourth Media workshops organized for this year were attended by more than 80 media persons. The President of Pakistan Press Council, Mr. Shafqat Abbasi on this occasion stressed on the arrangement of such conferences for creating awareness among media persons about mental illnesses and removing myths from the minds of the general public. He requested Prof. Rizwan Taj to expand this program nationwide all over the country. Prof. Rizwan Taj highlighted guidelines for media on reporting style. Asima Khan, senior psychologist gave a detailed lecture on common mental health disorders.

c) Development of the website of Mental Health in Primary Care - www.mhpc-pims.com/study.html.

d) Series of Training workshops for Federally administered tribal territories:

i) The first training in Primary Mental Health care workshops was started with LHVs, GPs and other Para medical staff from FATA region; the total number of participants was 30 including males and females.

ii) Two separate sets of training on whole school approach for FATA teachers were organized. The training workshops were found very beneficial and were appreciated by the participants.

2. Pakistan Psychiatric Society representation and presentations:

a) APA in Philadelphia; b) WPAR in Dubai; c) Royal college of Psychiatrists annual conference, Liverpool; d) WPA in Prague; e) SAARC Psychiatry meeting in Colombo.

3. World Mental Health Day:

The World Mental Health Day was celebrated by Pakistan Psychiatric Society in various psychiatry departments of the country including Multan, Hyderabad, Karachi, and Islamabad.

 

4. Establishment of Memory Clinic:

The Alzheimer society of Pakistan and Australia team visited Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for an academic lecture and inaugurated the Memory Clinic in the department of psychiatry, Pakistan institute of Medical Sciences.

5. 19th International Psychiatric Conference of Pakistan Psychiatric Society

The international conference (WPA co- sponsored) of Pakistan Psychiatric Society was held on 27-29 December 2012 in Islamabad under the Presidentship of Prof. Rizwan Taj.

The theme was mental health in primary care services for all. Overall, an excess of sixty sessions were organized including plenary, workshops, key note address and original papers on the theme.

The main overseas speakers were Prof. Dinesh Bhugra (UK) and Prof. Jeffery Geller (USA).
