The Third Congress of Psychiatrists of Bosnia and Herzegovina

As previously announced, the III Congress of Psychiatrists of Bosnia and Herzegovina was held in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina on 12-14 October 2012, as the first national congress of our Association after its reorganization in 2008. We are very proud that the Congress had strong international participation; particularly that it was co-sponsored by the WPA and under the patronage of the EPA. The main topic of the Congress was “Psychiatry between Phenomenology and Neuroscience”. The main organizer was the Psychiatric Association of Bosnia-Herzegovina (PABH) in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry of the University Clinical Centre Tuzla. The Congress had a very wide and comprehensive scientific program and consisted of 10 Plenary and 25 Invited Lectures with more than 60 Oral Presentations held by the prominent experts from the field of psychiatry in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Universities and mental health institutions, and also numerous invited lecturers from the region and worldwide; more than 250 lectures and participants from 12 countries took part in the Congress. The participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina represented more than half of all the psychiatrists and most of the mental health institutions in the country, and it is also important to state that most of them are members of our Association.

As part of the Congress, two EPA CME Courses and Symposium about addictions (collaborated with SEEANet) were held, and for the first time a joint workshop was organized with WPA together with users about WPA recommendations for good practices in the mutual collaboration between users, their families and mental health professionals (conducted by Prof. A. Javed, WPA Secretary for Sections, and Prof. H. Herrman). The social part of the Congress included the opening ceremony with distinguishted guests from abroad and high level representatives from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tuzla Canton and University Clinical Centre Tuzla. At the gala dinner the participants had the opportunity to relax and more closely meet and enjoy with their colleaugues and friends. The Fourth General Assembly of the PABH was held at the end of the Congress with the regular election of the Leadership of the PABH, in accordance with the PABH Statute. The Congress was supported by 21 sponsors.

Prof. Izet Pajević, President of the Association and the Congress Committee said that the Congress had strong scientific influence on future practice in our country and as the biggest psychiatric event in Bosnia and Herzegovina, had great success. Our Association is enormously grateful to the WPA and EPA for their support and recognition of all our efforts and contributions in those most important associations of psychiatrists.
