The International Congress of the WPA in Prague in October 2012 has been an important stage in the development of the WPA Section on Military Psychiatry. During the Congress, a Section symposium and a Section business meeting were held.

The Section symposium “Mental health in the military settings: problems and pathways to solutions” included four reports – Prof. Dragica Kozarić-Kovačić and her colleague Igor Marinić, MD, from University Hospital Dubrava (Zagreb, Croatia) presented results of the recent studies on psychophysiology of PTSD in war veterans and using data mining methods in assessing characteristics of patients with PTSD; Prof. Vsevolod Rozanov from Odessa National Mechnikov University (Ukraine) spoke about reasons in the increase of suicides of war veterans; and Dr. Maj Jan Vevera from Charles University (Czech Republic) presented results of his study on distress and coping mechanisms in the army contingent deployed to Afghanistan.

During the Section business meeting, the main goals of the Section were discussed, The meeting was also attended by Prof. Afzal Javed, WPA Secretary for Sections, who spoke about the role of Sections and their collaboration in increasing knowledge. Furthermore, the procedures for online elections were agreed upon.

Elections for the Section board were organized online after the Congress. Prof. Rozanov was elected for the position of Chair, Prof. Kozarić-Kovačić for the position of Co-chair, and Igor Marinić, MD as Secretary.
