Report from the President

On October 6, 2012, as President of the WPA, I received from the American Association of Psychiatric Administrators (AAPA) in New York City, during the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) 64th Institute of Psychiatric Service, the APA’s Administrative Psychiatry Award. I also delivered a lecture on this occasion.

During the period October 7-11, 2012, I attended the 46th National Congress of the Italian Psychiatric Association held in Milan, Italy. On this occasion, we honored the contributions made over the years by Dr. Francesca Brambilla on behalf of the WPA Section on Psychoneuroendocrinology, and also held a symposium focusing on psychiatric advances on this occasion.

On October 17-21, 2012, we held the WPA International Congress in Prague, Czech Republic. This Congress was a jewel insofar as scientific contributions were concerned, and close to 2,000 mental health professionals attended this scientific event. During this Congress, I was honored with an honorary membership in the Czech Psychiatric Association. Almost all WPA Components and Committees met during this Congress.

On October 25-27, 2012, I was invited and represented the WPA at the XIV National Journeys of Dual Pathology held in Madrid, Spain. I delivered a lecture on behalf of the WPA focusing on “Substance Abuse among Latin American Migrants”. The Spanish Society of Dual Pathology is an affiliated association of the WPA.

On November 15-19, 2012, I was invited to attend and represent the WPA at the XVII APAL Congress organized by the Latin American Psychiatric Association. On this occasion, I delivered a lecture focusing on the “Role of Psychiatry in Primary Care”. The APAL is an affiliated association of the WPA.

On November 26-27, 2012, I represented the WPA, and was invited to deliver a lecture at the “Symposium on Challenges and Opportunities in Psychiatry Research”, held in Madrid, Spain, and organized by the “Juan Jose Lopez-Ibor Foundation” and the “Fundacion Ramon Areces”. My lecture focused on “Latin American Perspectives of Research in Neurosciences”.

On November 29-December 2, 2012, I attended and delivered a lecture at the WPA Thematic Conference on Intersection Collaboration on the topic of “The Multidisciplinary Facets of Psychiatry” and jointly with the “4th European Congress” of the “International Neuropsychiatric Association”, focusing on “Overlap and Integration in Neuropsychiatry”, and the “First Interdisciplinary Congress”, focusing on “Psychiatry and Related Sciences”. My lecture on this occasion focused on “Ethnicity and Pharmacology”.
Finally, on December 14-16, 2012, I participated as a consultant in the “Arab Board of Psychiatry Exam” that took place in Cairo, Egypt.

During this last quarter, I had the unique opportunity to attend very scientific and organizational meetings and conferences. Needless to say, I was honored with these experiences. I am also proud of the many opportunities I had to learn from my colleagues from all over the world.

Cordially,

Pedro Ruiz, M.D.
WPA President (2011-2014)
