Body Image and Identity in Contemporary Societies Psychoanalytic, social, cultural and aesthetic perspectivesI am writing to share with you the good news of a new publication by the WPA Section of Art and Psychiatry, a collective volume published by Routledge and edited by Hans-Otto Thomashoff and myself.

This interdisciplinary volume brings together contributions from psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, psychiatrists and scholars in the humanities and social sciences to explore representations of the body. The chapters analyze the social constructs of the “ideal” or “normative” body in terms of beauty, gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, class and disability, and trace the mechanisms which define the role of physical appearance in the formation of identity and the assumption of social roles.
