German-African research workshop for innovation in African health care systems was held at Nairobi, Kenya February 24 – 26, 2016. This workshop, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, aimed to establish networks between German and African clinicians and researchers and to discuss the strategic development of African health care systems to better include refugee mental health needs. It was jointly hosted by the University of Konstanz, Germany and Africa Mental Health Foundation (AMHF). There were 54 selected participants from 11 countries, representing seven international organizations, 20 universities and nine NGOs that are dedicated to mental health service delivery.
The highlight of the workshop was the roundtable discussion on the way forward in which the following presidents of Psychiatric Associations participated: Prof. Wolfgang Gaebel, President of the European Association of Psychiatrists, the Zone 13 and Zone 14 representatives of the WPA Prof. Owoidoho Udofia and Prof. David Ndetei respectively, the president of the Kenyan Association of Psychiatrists, Dr. Simon Njuguna, the President of the Ethiopian Psychiatric Association and representatives from the Tanzanian and Nigerian Psychiatric Associations, Dr. Praxeda Swai and Dr. Taiwo Sheikh respectively.
