The WPA Tri-Sectional Webinar “Climate Change and Mental Health: TOTAL Health Consequences” is now available on the WPA Education Portal


Part of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Webinar Series, the WPA Tri-Sectional Webinar “Climate Change and Mental Health: TOTAL Health Consequences” took place on Saturday 29th October 2022 at 10am EDT.


The webinar was opened by Afzal Javed and Thomas Schulze. Prof. Sorel chaired the event and overall coordination was managed by Dr. Victor Pereira-Sanchez, Secretary of the CMCR Section. Eight highly acclaimed experts in mental health from across key regions provide a global perspective on this important area:

  • AFRICA: Dr. Jibril I. M. Handuleh, Somaliland (Presenter) Prof. David Ndetei, Kenya (Discussant)

  • ASIA/PACIFIC: Dr. Darpan Kaur Mohinder Singh, India (Presenter) Prof. Yueqin Huang, China (Discussant)

  • THE AMERICAS: Prof. Rahn Bailey, USA (Presenter) Dr. Lise Van Susteren, USA (Discussant)

  • EUROPE: Prof. Luigi Janiri, Italy (Presenter) Dr. Ruta Karaliuniene, Germany (Discussant)


The webinar was organised by the "Climate Change and Mental Health: TOTAL Health Consequences" WPA Tri-Sectional Project leadership. This innovative project was initiated by Professor Eliot Sorel, Founder of the Conflict Management & Resolution Section (CMCR) in collaboration with Prof. Fernando Lolas, Chair, CMCR Section, Prof. Luigi Janiri, Chair, Ecology, Psychiatry & Mental Health Section, and Prof. David Baron, Chair, Psychiatry, Medicine, and Primary Care Section.


The Tri-Sectional project keeps actively working in taking action to address the TOTAL Health challenges of climate change, meeting every month via video conferencing, planning future education, research, and advocacy action, and recruiting new members and partners. Colleagues interested in learning more and/or joining the initiative should contact our project leadership.
