Like World Mental Health Day (WMHD), celebrated annually on the 10th of October, Mental Health Week has become widely recognised throughout many European countries. Taking place during Mental Health Awareness Month, this year, Mental Health Awareness Week runs Monday 13 to Sunday 19 May 2024, with the theme “Movement: moving for our mental health.”
The event represents a commitment to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health.
According to a 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) Report, 13% of the global population – in other words, 1 of every 8 people – lives with a mental health disorder. Among our most vulnerable populations, the numbers are no less alarming: 8% of children and 14% of adolescents struggle with their mental health. Despite the magnitude of the mental health disorders, only 2% of health expenditures are allocated globally for addressing mental health challenges.
World Psychiatric Association is committed to raising awareness about mental health and its impact on well-being. Like this year’s theme, WPA has prioritised part of its Action Plan to the promotion of healthy lifestyles to enhance the mental and physical well-being of psychiatric patients, psychiatric staff, and the broader public. There is growing evidence highlighting the importance of healthy lifestyles and the positive effects of physical exercise, a balanced diet, and consistent sleep habits on mental health and well-being.
Integrating healthy lifestyle practices into a patient’s treatment and everyday life can supplement and amplify the effects of existing pharmacotherapies and psychotherapies. Furthermore, engaging both psychiatric staff and patients in joint sessions of physical activity can – in addition to improving the physical and mental health of all involved – strengthen connections, cohesion, and collaboration, improve mutual understanding, and reduce hierarchical divisions.
There will be many activities taking place during this week and for the whole month of May. WPA encourages everyone to get involved.
