WPA Medical Student Working Group Release Third eBook: Clinical Handbook in Psychiatry

Updated: Jan 10

The WPA Working Group on Medical Students publish an eBook handbook designed as an educational and reference resource originally for medical trainees and primary care practitioners

The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) has been at the forefront of advocating for the promotion of psychiatry among medical students and supporting the journey of medical learners. As part of the WPA Triennium Action Plan 2020-2023, capacity building and fostering an interest in psychiatry among medical students have emerged as pivotal objectives. To champion these goals, we established the WPA Working Group on Medical Students, dedicated to addressing the mental health and well-being of medical students, dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health, and showcasing psychiatry as a rewarding career path.

As such, we are happy to announce the third e-publication written by a team of medical students at the University of Ottawa (currently residents in psychiatry and family medicine at the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto) under the supervision of Dr. Khalid Bazaid, MD, FRCPC, the former Clerkship Rotation Director (Anglophone) and former Director of the Undergraduate Education Program, Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, University of Ottawa. During his time as the Director of the Undergraduate Education Program, Dr. Bazaid provided invaluable support and guidance in the development of this handbook. The authors appreciate the invaluable help of Alex Sinha and Khadije Sobh, the former and current coordinators, respectively, of the Undergraduate Education Program in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

This handbook was designed as an educational and reference resource originally for medical trainees at University of Ottawa. It can also be a useful resource for primary care practitioners.

Prof. Afzal Javed, WPA President commented: “The concept for this invaluable handbook was born from the minds of these dedicated medical students. They have compiled a comprehensive resource that encompasses the vast knowledge required to attain clinical competence in psychiatry. With the aim of benefiting learners and practitioners alike, they diligently worked to bring this book to fruition with the great support of Dr. Bazaid.”
